So we ended up in today’s Guardian. As soon as I manage to get a copy of the article I’ll put a pic up on here of it… However in the meantime you can also read it here: Geek Goddess. To be honest the start of this article comes across as a bit ra ra… but really we are all very geeky and down to earth. I don’t want Girl Geeks being put off by the tone of the article so I thought I’d mention that now.

And I also wanted to bring to light that it’s not just us adults that are being geeky online. There are youngsters too just starting out their journey into blogging! A great example of a student just starting out is: Whatever Things

a student from a central London School. Her 2 poems there are great and well worth a read. Feel free to give her feedback and support her learning! The idea of getting students to blog as part of their coursework on this occasion was brough to you by DigitalMaverick, aka Drew Buddie. He’s one of a few teachers that are encouraging their students to get into technology and a great role model to other teachers!

As you read in the article we do have a couple of events coming up including our 3 year anniversary event at Google and we will announce the sign up details for that here on this website at the end of july (the anniversary event is towards the end of August) Before that we also have an event in planning on the 25th June. The details for that event will also be placed on this site.

I’ve been a bit busy lately and didn’t find the time to organize a GGC 2 weeks ago. To make up for that though we’ll have two in the next two weeks! This first one may be a bit short notice, but it will take place in two days time on Thursday. The next one will be the Thursday after that (May 29th), but an official announcement for that will follow.

I’ve decided to change one aspect of the GGC’s: they won’t be “Girls Only” anymore. Instead I want it to follow the same rules of the Girl Geek Dinners: guys are allowed, if accompanied by a girl geek.

We are currently in the planning phases of doing a Girl Geek Dinner with and majority sponsored by IT4C in June.  The proposed date is set as the 25th June.  There will not be a May event as I have too much on to arrange this at the moment however there are regular Girl Geek Coffee meetups in the city during the day and Geek Dinners have just announced an event with Moo.com so please do feel free to sign up and attend those as well!

We have one confirmed speaker for the June event and are looking for a couple of others.  Our first speaker will be talking about Web Accessibility in Web 2.0  if you think you are up for talking at this event then do let us know.  The venue capacity is 60 people so it’s a nice friendly reasonably small group.

We are also looking for speakers for out August 3 year Anniversary event which will be held at Google’s office.  If you are interested in speaking at that then please send over your speaker proposal.

The combined London Geek Dinner and London Girl Geek Dinner on 26 April was fun. The venue was perfect, just the right size for the attendees, so you could mingle and sit down at various tables and even sofas without being too cramped.

Here’s the video of the speech by Dr Sophie Kain on being a geek (with intro by Ian Forrester). The talk was very good, with some great Q&A and thoughtful discussion on geekdom and what it means to be a geek. As well as some comments on The Apprentice and Sir Alan, for you gossip / TV fans out there! Enjoy.

Free Mentoring via MentorSET

So recently it was brought to my attention that MentorSET have just recently launched their online mentoring system for women in the Science, Engineering and Technology industry. This is a great opportunity for anyone in the industry to link up with a mentor if they haven’t already. The program is currently open to anyone with a focus on females in Science, Engineering and Technology.

Please do take a look. “The MentorSET scheme is currently FREE to both Mentors and Mentees. Mentors’ expenses will be paid. For mentees, some expenses (travel etc) may be met by the scheme.” So there are no excuses not to join in.

Now I know that mentoring was one of the things that the Girl Geeks were interested in getting involved with so I’d be interested in hearing about any feedback on the MentorSet system to find out if it is something that works or doesn’t. I’m hoping it will be something that benefits everyone who uses it!
