icon1 | icon2 Event | icon4 11 11th, 2009| icon3Comments Off

London Girl Geek Dinners and the British Computer Society (North London Branch) have joined forces to bring a wonderful Christmas event to you all.  The “Geeky Gadgets & Gizmos” event is a fun pre-Christmas party where 120 people gather to watch some of us show off their favourite gadgets, judged by a panel of geeky gadgety experts.

You don’t have to present your favourite gadget – you can just come and enjoy watching others present and of course the festive season cheer.  With mince pies galore, friends, fun, wine, juice and geeky gadgets, it’s sure to be a fantastically fun event!

To join up for this brilliant evening, simply visit: http://bcsnlbdec09-lggd.eventbrite.com/

This is a special LGGD & BCS combined event so let’s show our support by grabbing a ticket quickly and visiting one of the homes of geekyness – The British Computer Society.

If you’re curious about being a member, they are always happy to chat membership so just find a BCS member on the night or ask me – Judith Lewis – and I’ll help you find some information.

See you there!

Over The Air – Suggest a Session!

.!.

After a number of false starts, we are a “go” for Over the Air 2009 – the sequel to last year’s hugely well-received Over the Air mobile developer event. We will be holding the event over the 25th and 26th of September (Friday and Saturday). Once again, we will be featuring a number of sessions on different technology / development (and now art / design) topics, with a focus on mobile. Once again, the event will be free for attendees and we expect between 300 and 400 attendees over the 2 days. Once again, people will be working overnight on mobile prototypes and hacks and once again there will be an awards ceremony on the second day to reward the most creative and exciting work.

I am working on putting together the schedule right now and on this I need your help. If you would like to run a session at Over the Air, please take moment to fill in our session suggestion form (http://bit.ly/ota2009session). The sessions will be 55 minutes in length and while the focus of the event is on mobile development, we are also accepting sessions on user experience and design and we are putting together some sessions on mobile art including (hopefully) a mobile film festival.

If you’re not in London and you don’t think you can make it over but you know someone who might be interested in running a session, please feel free to pass this on to them (or indeed to blog / tweet about it). I am also trying to drive awareness of the event and since this is a “grass roots” event, we have a very limited marketing budget so any help getting the word out would be greatly appreciated.

For more information on the event, visit http://overtheair.org

We have just finalised all the details for this year’s anniversary Girl Geek Dinner.  Since we know that there will be way more demand for this event than we could possibly cater for we are also going to live stream the event.

The tickets will be released in two batches.  The first batch will be released on the 08/17/2009 at 1:30pm so that it’s across lunchtime rather than meeting times! The second batch are at an after work time of 8:30pm on 08/18/2009.  Remember to add those times to the diary.

We will open up a small reserves list but we need to know drop outs asap as we can’t have more than 80 people for fire & safety reasons and Channel 4 require a list of attendees in advance of the event for name badges and to provide to security.

Many thanks

Apr 7

Far from being the cruellest month, April is our most benevolent and busiest so far this year, with the SCI-FI LONDON event taking place on 30th April (for which there are still places, sign up now!), and also an opportunity for us to hold the below joint event with those sassy Silicon Stilettos, and Blurb, who are kindly sponsoring the event to be held at the Soho Hotel, Soho.

The event will commence from 6.45pm in Screening Room 2 at the Soho Hotel. Unfortunately, Blurb’s CEO, Eileen Gittens, has had to cancel her trip to London, so the event will now commence with a talk from Aruna Khanzada, a photographer and member of Blurbnation, a community of editors, writers, designers, artists, and photographers who have all built or added to their own businesses making books for clients on the Blurb platform. Aruna will be accompanied by Teresa Pereira from Blurb, who will be available for the Q&A session answer any questions you may have on Blurb or Blurbnation, after which, the event will flow on to the drinks reception.

We are delighted we’re able to share the opportunity to learn more about the Blurbnation community with Aruna :

  • Aruna Khanzada :: Formerly a barrister, Aruna took up photography as her profession after the birth of her two children. Despite a successful 15 years at the Bar, Aruna has now started her own extremely successful business, Open and Shut, combining photography and book publishing. Aruna will talk about how the Internet has enabled her to build a business creating and selling products on her own terms.
  • Teresa Pereira :: Aruna will be accompanied by Teresa Pereira from Blurb, who will be available for the Q&A session answer any questions people may have on Blurb or Blurbnation.

Do join us for the talk, post-talk drinks and for entrepreneurially-inclined conversations/networking!

Many thanks to Eileen, Kate & Suz for helping make things happen!

  • End Time: The event will continue until around 10.00pm
  • Venue:

Screening Room 2, Soho Hotel, 4 Richmond Mews, W1D 3DH. The Soho Hotel is situated in a quiet street between Dean and Wardour Street in Soho, the heart of London’s ‘entertainment’ neighbourhood.

  • Hosted by: Girl Geek Dinners, Silicon Stilettos and Blurb
  • Food & Drink: Refreshments provided courtesy of Blurb
  • Subject for the evening: How the Internet Gives Entrepreneurs the Edge
  • Format: Talk, post-talk refreshments, and conversations.
  • Capacity: 50 people (with 20 spaces through Silicon Stilettos)

14th April 2009 :: cosmic news, sci-fi fans, space for another 30 people has materialised due to a rip in the space-time continuum, or something, so we’ve just added these tickets — set your diaries to stun come!

We’re in orbit over the April 2009 London Girl Geek event which we’re holding jointly with the groovy individuals at SCI-FI-LONDON who are also kindly sponsoring the event to be held at the Apollo West End Theatre on Regent Street.

The event will commence at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start with talks on sci-fi film and fiction from the below speakers. The event will flow on to the cinema bar afterwards, and films will be showing from 7.45pm if any attendees wish to book separately. On which, Girl Geeks attending this event are eligible for a 10% discount on SCI-FI-LONDON cinema tickets that evening, just quote London Girl Geeks!

As per details from the SCI-FI-LONDON website (do visit to learn more about what’s happening during their annual festival taking place from 29th April to 4th May), speakers will include:

  • Dr Rachel Armstrong :: Dr Armstrong trained as a doctor at both Cambridge and Oxford and is a qualified General Practitioner, however, her career as a doctor has been far from conventional. Her concern for patients disfigured by the scars of leprosy led her on a journey that questioned assumptions about what ‘normal’ human anatomy is, or indeed, whether there is anything ‘natural’ about us at all. Dr Armstrong will present a resume of her adventures in practical Science Fiction over the last ten years, revealing a shocking portrait of human identity through the work of radical performance artists and leading to her current work that challenges notions of ‘life’ itself. [Warning хочу секс самара : Not for the squeamish or easily morally outraged.]
  • Additional Speaker :: TBA

Many thanks to Sara & Louis from SCI-FI-LONDON for arranging the space and making things happen!

Full Details:

  • Date & Time: Thursday, 30th April 2009, 6:00 for 6.30pm

Tea Time with London Girl Geek Dinners

The Belgian & French Girl Geeks have organised a day out in London on Saturday, March 14th and they’d love to meet up with some London Girl Geeks for an afternoon of tea, mobile computing and networking in Knightsbridge.
Our European compadres have organised for the event to take place at the Berkeley Hotel kindly sponsored by Eurostar, commencing at 3.30pm for a 6pm finish. An informal presentation will be arranged to demo a mobile social application they’re developing for the day. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, see a great mobile application demonstrated, and enjoy a rather scrumptious Saturday afternoon tea in London.

Only 40 spots are available and tickets tend to go quickly, so please do only request a ticket if you *will* be attending as otherwise others will miss out – if you find you can’t make it for any reason, do let us know as we might be able to allocate your ticket to another Girl Geek – thank you!
